Lake Naivasha is a glittering gem like lake etched in the Great Rift Valley. Dense papyrus forms the periphery of this fresh water lake. The shores are abundant with yellow fever trees which form a lovely canopy providing shade to the herds of buffalo and giraffe as they drift through. Hippos wallow in the water giving out an occasional grunt and come onto the shores at night for grazing. Naivasha is a great weekend escape from Nairobi city. It is also enroute to major national parks and lakes making for a lovely pit stop. There is plenty to do in the area. Hells Gate National Park which borders the lake is known for its hiking trails. Amateur mountain climbers can try out Longonut which is not too far. There are two small lakes close by worth checking out. If you are an avid golfer then tryout the 18 hole Rift Valley Golf Course which enjoys vistas of the lake. Naivasha is a world class birding destination also!
